On October 5 teachers in Salt Lake City School District will continue their silent protest against recent decisions made by the district’s Board of Education and superintendent. The protest will be held as Dr. Donald Thomas, the former Salt Lake City School District superintendent who introduced the Shared Governance Process to the district in 1974, addresses the board about the value this process brings to the district.

The Shared Governance Process requires the board to involve administrators, teachers and parents in important school decisions. The protesting teachers feel recent Salt Lake City School District Board of Education decisions have circumvented that process, leaving teachers and parents out of the loop.

“In staging this silent protest, we hope to send a strong message to the board and superintendent that we value the Shared Governance Process and expect the board and superintendent adhere to that process as they have agreed,” said Frank Langheinrich, teacher at East High. “This process has worked in the District for 36 years and if changes are needed, those changes should go through the negotiated process.”
